My View Into Retirement

The Mr. is setting up Fish Camp. Here are the views from the back of the trailer. The first image is the river as you head out toward the harbor.

This view is down river. A wrap-around deck is being constructed.

This is not a permanent move, just digs for the summer. I plan on spending mucho hours on the deck leisurely reading books I have gathered over the years.

Just thrifted in this group of New Look patterns. I place them as 1990s kids fashion.

While I usually don't pick up the New Look patterns, they don't sell for much. I thought these were awfully cute.

On a different subject, we've hit a cold snap in Northern California. While I posted that I had planted seeds in the greenhouse, I haven't done that yet. Good thing. Might have to wait a month.

Four Months to Freedom

I have completed all of the applications, informed all of the right people, now it is a mere four months to retirement. I have spent the last 10 years in state service for various departments in California. The game is to keep moving up so you can max out your monthly retirement benefit.

There are three departments that I would recommend to anyone entering state service. All in Sacramento, they are:

Attorney General's Office
California Department of Health Care Services
California Department of Public Health

I won't list the two departments where I had sub-par experiences and left as quickly as possible. At one location, I lasted 3 months and requested a return to the AG's office. The other awful place was a 100% remote position where I struggled for over a year and left on medical leave.

The beauty of the state's safety net for an older worker is if you don't succeed at a promotional position, you have the right to return to your last passed probationary position. Medical leave is also available if the stress of the job becomes overwhelming.

I will miss Sacramento. It is just now starting to revive. State departments have mandated a two day return to office in the upcoming months. New restaurants are in the works. The mourning period from the last few years is starting to lift.

I will not miss the commute. It is a one hour one way trek on a good day. Two hours on the road each in-office work day meant I listened to a lot of music.

If you are someone in your 30s or 40s, my advice is to have a 3-legged stool in retirement. That stool represents your social security, retirement from your job, and your personal IRA. A fourth leg to a stool would be extra income such as eBay sales. The studier that stool is, the more comfortable you will be.

Saving the Images - Managing Media part 2

One of the downsides to collecting is sometimes you have to store stuff away for awhile. I know I must have this doll somewhere but I do not remember her at all. The image was captured on a rural road in Amador county.
After storing all of my music to the "OneDrive," I am rounding up all of my pictures to store there also. Some I had stored on a thumb drive. Here is one from the 1961 Pacific Ocean Park series, a group of which I sold to someone the original slides. I kept the images of our family from that now-defunct park. That is a my mom, my brother, and a 2-year old me.

This is a rescued slide from
Bethany Mills American City, placing it in the 1950s with those fin-tail cars in the foreground. I went through a phase of buying 35mm slides wherever I could find them.

Some of the slides were marked with the description, this one being Paris, France Children's Ride at Eiffel Tower, Sept. 1957.

And there is this amazing image Plaza del Signoria, Feb. 1966.

An example of what I used to collect. It was a lot of someone else's vacation photos.

I passed by some slides at an estate sale because they were priced too high. I do keep an eye out for them though.

Countdown to Retirement has begun. Five months to go and retired in July 2024. I have all these plans estate saleing, thrifting, sewing, college classes, puzzles to start. You all know how it will end up -
